Rooting Out Sin

“Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.”-Ecclesiastes 9:18 Amplified Bible

Jesus taught about the importance of “counting the cost.” A king, for example, should be sure that he has enough resources before going to war. Enough troops. Enough weapons (Luke 14:28-31).

The Bible also warns that weapons and armies by themselves aren’t enough to win battles. In fact, “wisdom is better.” Wisdom helps us know when to fight. It enables us to develop winning strategies and the most effective plans.

These principles are not just true for warfare but also for business and politics, for relationships and families. For health and finances. This is why the Bible spends so much time talking about wisdom. Encouraging us to seek wisdom. To cultivate an attitude guided by Godly wisdom.

We need to realize that God’s wisdom gives us real discernment. It helps us understand conditions. It gives us perspective and an understanding of our own lives, the situations we face, and the people with whom we interact. Wisdom helps us recognize the right deals (and which are wrong). It gives us the insight to know when to be aggressive (or passive). It helps us know whom to trust as allies, and whom not to trust. It helps us be effective soldiers (and leaders).

However, while wisdom is essential for victory, our efforts can be tainted by sin, which can “destroy much good.” It poisons our heart and mind, and distorts our values. It corrupts our judgment and fills us with deceptive thoughts. Perhaps more importantly, sin actually can block the flow of God’s Spirit.

Do you want to be successful in life? Make sure that you start with Godly wisdom. That you build your life on His Word. Remember that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). But also be on guard against the corrupting influence of sin. Seek to stay sensitive to God’s Spirit.

Prayer: Father, I seek Your power and wisdom in my life. Reveal any sin that blocks the flow of Your Spirit. Use me in the lives of others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
