Resolving Conflicts God’s Way reminds us to seek truth, show mercy, and handle disputes with grace instead of rushing to judgment.

“‘Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar’ … When the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly … gathered at Shiloh to make war against them” (Joshua 22:11–12).

After 40 years in the wilderness, the Israelites finally approached the Promised Land. But two and a half tribes asked to stay on the east side of the Jordan. Moses agreed, provided that they help the other tribes take possession of the land.

They kept their promises, and Joshua allowed them to return to the land they wanted. Everything seemed fine—until it became known that these tribes had built an altar east of the Jordan. The rest were so concerned that they gathered for war, accusing the eastern tribes of “rebellion” (v. 16).

However, tragedy was avoided when these tribes explained that they weren’t being unfaithful: The altar simply was a witness to remind future generations of the true God.

How easy it can be for us to act like the accusing tribes, rushing to judgment and assuming the worst, criticizing without knowing the facts.

To prevent these kinds of disputes, Jesus said we are to make every effort to solve disputes in private: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother” (Matthew 18:15). We should involve others or address issues publicly only after private options have been exhausted.

Before you rush to judgment, check the facts. If you have questions, don’t assume the worst, but find the truth. Follow Jesus’ teaching regarding disputes. Remember, the merciful will receive mercy (Matthew 5:7).
