Resist Compromise

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

While Felix chased personal rewards, Paul stayed faithful to God’s call—reminding us to seek eternal purpose over temporary gain.

“Felix … gave orders to the centurion for Paul to be kept in custody and yet have some freedom … hoping that money would be given to him by Paul; therefore he also used to send for him quite often and talk with him.”—Acts 24:22–26 NASB

Antonius Felix rose to prominence within the Roman Empire. While governing Judea, he increasingly used his position to gain personal wealth. Roman historian Tacitus described Felix’s pervasive corruption as one who “believed he could commit any evil deed with impunity.”

People paid bribes or whatever it took to garner his favor. So when Paul was in custody in Caesarea, Felix expected him to do the same. He delayed action and spoke with Paul often, hoping that Paul would give him money.

During one of their discussions, Felix “became frightened” (v. 25) by Paul’s message. But continuing to play politics, when he left his position, he did “the Jews a favor” (v. 27) and kept Paul imprisoned.

Meanwhile, Paul refused to compromise his faith. Day after day, he remained in jail, knowing he could secure his freedom if he paid a bribe. He continually demonstrated that he was ready to testify about Jesus whenever and wherever possible. His focus was on serving God, who had called him to take the Gospel to Rome, even if that meant being a prisoner.

Ask yourself if you’re maintaining your faithfulness like Paul. Commit to resist compromise. Stand strong for the Gospel.

Rather than allowing the world to shape your thoughts and actions, choose the path that pleases God. Stay resolutely focused on obeying Him and accomplishing His purposes, regardless of the cost.

Reflection Question: Where might I be tempted to compromise for personal gain?
