Remembering the Last Supper

It seemed that Leonardo da Vinci could master any discipline. He was a painter and sculptor, architect and engineer, writer and philosopher. He designed weapons and bridges. In 1496, this multi-skilled genius turned his attention to Jesus’ last night on earth. The result was “The Last Supper,” considered among the greatest of all paintings.

Da Vinci focused on the moment when Jesus told His disciples that one of them would betray Him. Describing this painting, scholar Frank Zöllner draws attention to how Jesus sits in the center. At the far left, Bartholomew rises in agitation, while James and Andrew “raise their hands in surprise.” Peter “looks angrily towards the center,” while Judas fingers “the pouch with the money he has been paid to betray the Lord.” To the right, are two more groups of three disciples each.

Da Vinci is one of many artists who sought to give their personal vision of this event. In reality, each of us can imagine what that night must have been like—how Jesus felt it was crucial to celebrate the Passover with His disciples; how He washed their feet and taught them about the future and the Holy Spirit. We can imagine their response when He said one of them would betray Him.

Today, as you ponder Jesus’ last supper, seek to make this event real for you! This was a night to remember. Jesus made that clear when He broke bread, gave thanks, and told the disciples, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 19:22).

Think of all that Jesus has done for you. Think of His death and how He became your Passover Lamb. Think of His example of servanthood. Think of the victory that is yours because of Jesus! Where would you be without Him?
