The Weight of Our Example

The rediscovery of God’s Word in Josiah’s day reveals the weight of our example and how faithfulness or neglect quietly shapes the lives of others for generations to come.

“Go, inquire of the LORD … For great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us” (2 Kings 22:13).

Over a period of generations, God’s people had forgotten about His Word. Even the religion of the priests was based on empty tradition. As a result, they had no anchor and drifted further away from the truths in the Word. This process of drifting established a pattern that was felt for generations.

Finally, when Josiah was king, the Law was discovered by Hilkiah, the high priest. This discovery proved to be a shock. Suddenly, everyone in Judah had new revelation about the problems they faced. It was as though they saw their own lives and history in a new light. They realized they were experiencing the impact of their ancestors’ failures.

The Bible demonstrates repeatedly how our actions impact the lives of others—people in our immediate family as well as our neighbors and friends. But we also need to realize the example we’re setting for future generations—not only our children and grandchildren, but many others who are influenced by what we say and do. They will either benefit or suffer because of our lives.

Think about the impact you’re having on the people around you, and remember that your impact will continue to be felt far into the future. Honor God with your life. Seek first His Kingdom. Obey His Word. Be an example that will bring others to Christ and encourage them to live for Him.
