Remembering

In the heat of the moment, an experience can seem unforgettable, as if indelibly branded on our memory. Yet the freshness of these moments can fade over time, and we can forget the lessons learned. Meanwhile, things that have become essential to us can seem unimportant to younger generations.

These are reasons we all need to learn about the past. To study history. To understand why events that unfolded decades or even centuries ago could unfold again in our time. The philosopher George Santayana memorably summarized this perspective when he wrote, Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

We see this pattern in every generation and in every area. In our thoughts and emotions. In our finances and physical health. And in our spiritual lives.

The Bible reminds us that there is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Patterns are inevitably repeated over time. We may be surprised by this, if we have forgotten or if we never learned the lessons of the past.

The Bible urges us to study the patterns in God’s Word. To learn from the experiences of His people, and to stay humble and teachable.

Today, make a commitment to study the Word. Look for patterns that apply in your life. Seek to learn from the past, and the experiences of others. Ask God to give you insights. Use this as an opportunity to thank Him for His faithfulness. Commit your way to Him, confident that you can trust in Him!
