Rediscovering the Supernatural Piece of Christmas

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Rediscovering the supernatural aspect of Christmas reminds us that God still works miracles, just as He did in the birth of Jesus.

“An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.’”—Matthew 1:20 NASB

For many people now, Christmas has become nothing more than a secular holiday … an event to encourage good feelings and kind deeds … a time of parties, gifts, decorations, and commercialism.

But the Bible tells a distinctly different story of supernatural events! Think about the many miracles that took place around the birth of Jesus, the importance of dreams, and the roles played by the Holy Spirit and angels!

Three times “an angel of the Lord” appeared to Joseph in a dream: first, to tell him Mary had conceived a child by the Holy Spirit; later, to tell him to take Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt; then, to tell him to return from Egypt.

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would give birth to a Son. An angel also appeared to Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. Angels appeared to the shepherds outside Bethlehem, announcing the birth of Jesus. In addition, the magi were given a dream of warning.

Remember, we serve a supernatural God. As Gabriel told Mary, “Nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). That message is still true!

Don’t let your life be dominated by commercialism or materialism or by the temporary things of this world.

Remember that God is not limited. He’s the God of miracles. Supernatural things are natural to Him. He can do anything!

Reflection Question: How can you focus on the supernatural work of God this Christmas?
