Pride and the Kingdom of Self

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

People gathered on the plain of Shinar (in what today is Iraq). They were proud of themselves, confident, and determined that others would honor them. That no one would forget their accomplishments.

So they decided to build a tower. It was to be a mighty piece of engineering. A marvel that could be seen for miles. A testament to their skills and abilities. Without this tower, they feared they would be scattered throughout the earth, and vulnerable. They would not get the notoriety, credit, or honor they felt they were due.

In that time, no greater contrast could be found than Abraham. Unlike the people of Babel, Abraham was a man of faith. He was willing to leave comfort and stability of nearby Ur, and follow God no matter where He asked him to go. He did not seek possessions or recognition. And God blessed him, precisely because he treasured God and His direction over recognition by the world. Because he walked by faith.

Today, the world is filled with people who are motivated by pride and personal desires. People who work hard to be recognized and honored for their accomplishments. They build towers and monuments, and seek to make names for themselves.

But none of these motivations pleases God. What does He look for? “Him… who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word” (Isaiah 66:2).

Make sure that you have the right attitude. Serve God. Walk by faith. Humble yourself before Him. Trust Him and follow Him wherever He leads.
