Praying for Our Country

The Bible reminds us that, for believers, the highest priority is serving God. That we are to seek first His Kingdom (Matthew 6:33). That “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20).

But the Bible also reminds us of the practical aspects of being a believer. The fact is that everything changes when we commit our lives to Christ. Suddenly, we are not limited to our flesh, with its imperfections. We can draw on His strength and experience the flow of His Spirit.

These changes impact all our relationships. Within our families and marriages. On our jobs. In our neighborhoods and churches.

Empowered by Christ, we are to have a good attitude toward our employers, treating our “earthly masters with deep respect and fear.” We can serve them “sincerely as you would serve Christ.” We can do “the will of God with all your heart.” We can work “with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people” (Ephesians 6:5-7, NLT).

The simple fact is that we are witnesses for the Gospel in everything we do. That “whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17)

This also helps us understand how we are to approach the country in which we live and its leaders. We are commanded to pray for our country and those in authority (2 Timothy 2:2). We also are encouraged to pray for God to bless and even prosper our country. To pray for His protection (building the walls).

In your life, seek to have the right priorities. Always focus on God. Seek first His Kingdom. Follow Jesus in everything you do. But also remember your duties as a Christian, and the importance of applying Biblical principles. Being a good example. Praying for your leaders.
