Persecutors

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Persecutors may strike with words or actions, but Jesus teaches us to respond with love, prayer, and the character of our Heavenly Father.

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. For he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good.”Matthew 5:44–45 CSB

Jesus knew what it meant to be persecuted, attacked, and criticized. His enemies continually spread rumors and false accusations against Him. They sought to kill Him and opposed everything He did.

Jesus knew His followers all would have similar experiences. Like Him, we would be persecuted, criticized, and opposed. We, too, would face enemies—people who would speak out against us and try to cause us difficulties, embarrassment, or pain.

When we face such things, it’s easy to react defensively, desire revenge, or even be filled with hate. But Jesus said we are to bless those who curse us; do good to those who hate us; and pray for those who persecute us. This is how we demonstrate that we’re “children of your Father.”

Jesus set an amazing example for us. While on the cross, He looked at those who were crucifying Him. Reacting in love, He prayed, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

How do you react when you’re criticized? When people oppose you or gossip about you? In your human nature, you may want to lash out or be defensive. But as a child of God, remember that He wants you to show love, even to your enemies. He wants you to pray for others, even for those who persecute you.

Put these principles into practice today!

Reflection Question: How can you respond with love when someone wrongs you?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I commit to You those who have persecuted me in some way. Bless them. Intervene in their lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
