Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

William Williams wanted to become a doctor, but after hearing the preaching of Howell Harris, he dedicated his life to ministry. Born on this day in 1717 in Pantycelyn (in Western Wales), Williams served two Anglican churches, but then felt called to reach people throughout his native land.

He spent the next 43 years traveling throughout Wales, preaching to thousands of people. But perhaps he had the greatest impact through his hymns and became known as “sweet singer of Wales.”

Today, he is best remembered for a hymn that was first published in 1745, called “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah.” It was a hymn inspired by the forty years the Israelites spent in the wilderness.

Williams saw himself as a “pilgrim through this barren land.” He knew how much he needed God, crying, “I am weak, but Thou art mighty; hold me with Thy powerful hand.” While the Israelites needed manna each day to survive, Williams realized that he needed God’s Word: “Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more.”

He sought God’s “healing stream” and His “fire and cloudy pillar” to lead him. He prayed that God would be his strong Deliverer, Strength, and Shield, and that He would take away his fears. He promised ever to sing praises to God and longed for the day that he would see Jesus, face-to-face: “Come, my Jesus, quickly come!”

Today, remember that you serve the same God who guided the Israelites in the wilderness. Who provided every need. Who protected them from every danger.

If you need guidance, call on Him. If you feel weak, remember that He is mighty! Fill your life with His Word. Hunger for more of Him. And trust in Him.
