Nothing Without Our God

Recently, a previously unknown work by Johann Sebastian Bach was discovered in the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, Germany. The two-page score was dated October 1713, when Bach was 28 years old. The music appears to have been written to mark the 52nd birthday of the Duke of Saxony-Weimar, in what today is central Germany.

The music world was excited to discover a new work by one of history’s greatest composers. However, this piece also revealed a great deal about Bach’s philosophy of life.

It opened with the phrase, “Everything with God and nothing without him.” These words were based on the motto of the duke for whom the piece was written, but they also reflected Bach’s personal commitment.

In fact, these words could have been the motto for Bach’s own life. They also provide a reminder for each of us that we cannot do anything of real meaning or lasting value without God, but that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

Peter wrote that God “has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness.” He sent Jesus to die for us, and then called us, equipped us, and gave us His Holy Spirit as our constant Companion, to guide, lead, and empower us.

In your life, stay on guard against pride. Humble yourself before God. Like Bach, remember that you are nothing without Him, but everything with Him. Remember that He has a plan just for you and has given you all the resources you need to accomplish that plan.

Commit your time, talent, and treasure to Him. And remember: Everything with God. Nothing without Him.
