Living for the Kingdom That Lasts Forever

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Living for the Kingdom That Lasts Forever reminds us that, unlike earthly empires, God’s Kingdom endures and calls us to dedicate our lives to it.

“In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth … Joseph also went up from Galilee … to Judea … in order to register along with Mary, who was betrothed to him, and was pregnant.”—Luke 2:1–5 NASB

After gaining power as Rome’s first emperor in 27 BC, Caesar Augustus engaged in a series of reforms to strengthen Rome. In his biography of Augustus, author Anthony Everitt describes how he ordered several censuses to be taken in order to facilitate these reforms.

A measure like this led to the decree that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem where Jesus was born. Augustus certainly had little concern for the impact of his actions on far-off Judea. His kingdom seemed incredibly huge and powerful, but he wasn’t aware that God was using him to accomplish His purposes.

Throughout time, worldly rulers like Augustus have focused on issues of control, power, taxes, and politics. Few realize that God’s Kingdom is infinitely more powerful and important. As Mary declared, “He has brought down rulers from their thrones, and has exalted those who were humble” (Luke 1:52).

As he prepared the way for the ministry of Jesus, John the Baptist declared, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 3:2). This is the Kingdom that really matters!

The things of this world will pass away, just like Augustus and his mighty empire. Dedicate your life to God’s Kingdom, the only Kingdom that will last forever.

Don’t allow anything to keep you from knowing the joy of the Lord this Christmas season. Focus on the birth of Jesus. Humble yourself before Him. He’s your Savior, Christ the Lord!

Reflection Question: What shifts in your life would show you’re living for God’s Kingdom over all?
