No Excuses

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Paul reminded believers there are no excuses—all have sinned and need God’s grace. Instead of judging others, focus on living in His mercy.

“Therefore you have no excuse, you foolish person, everyone of you who passes judgment; for in that matter in which you judge someone else, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.”Romans 2:1 NASB

The Roman Christians were vastly outnumbered, facing a hostile culture with pagan standards. They could have blamed their struggles on the circumstances they faced.

Just imagine trying to live a victorious Christian life when surrounded by people living the way Paul described in Romans 1:18–32! It was a world of ungodliness, unrighteousness, and vile behavior. People were given over “to impurity” and “the lusts of their hearts.” There were “gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil.”

Nonetheless, Paul wanted them to realize they had “no excuse” before God. He began talking not about “them” (as he had in Romans 1) but about “you.” These Romans believers were not to feel superior or even judgmental.

Paul was leading them to realize a great truth: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We aren’t justified before God because of anything we have done, but “as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23–24). All of us deserve death, “but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

Today, remember that you owe everything to God. How wonderful to have your sins forgiven, to be clean and pure, freed from guilt! Thank Him for His Word! His love, mercy, and grace! Offer yourself as a “living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God” (Romans 12:1).

Reflection Question: How does seeing your own need for grace change how you view others?

Prayer
