Molded and Shaped by the Potter’s Hands

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Molded and shaped by the Potter’s hands shows how God patiently forms our lives, removing flaws and crafting us into vessels of His purpose.

“‘Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.’ … The vessel he was making of clay was spoiled … and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter.”—Jeremiah 18:1–4

At the potter’s house, Jeremiah grasped the meaning of God’s sovereign hand and His unique plan for each person. He watched the potter as he shaped and reshaped his clay, patiently molding it until he was pleased.

Jeremiah realized that God’s people were just “like the clay in the potter’s hand” (v. 6). God, as their Potter, saw their potential but also recognized their flaws and the things that corrupted them. He knew what they could become, and because of His great love and eternal plan, He continued to mold them until He was satisfied. Each vessel was special to Him, with a unique design and purpose, and He worked in unique ways on each one.

As our Creator, God has a unique plan for each of our lives. And as a Potter, He continually goes about the process of molding and shaping us. This can be painful and unpleasant, as He removes what is unnecessary, harmful, undesirable, or inappropriate.

God alone determines when the process is complete. He sees our potential and the unique purposes for which we were created. As His vessels, He shapes us until we’re “conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29).

Today, remember that God is your Potter and your Creator. Submit to Him and cooperate with His plans. He wants the best for you. He promises to shape and mold you until you’re a vessel fully pleasing to Him.

Reflection Question: Where do you sense God reshaping you right now?
