Love That Won’t Let Go

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God.”—Romans 8:38–39 NASB

Born with poor eyesight in Scotland in March 1842, George Matheson’s vision deteriorated throughout his life. But he didn’t let that disability keep him from serving God. As a pastor, he memorized entire sections of the Bible and delivered his sermons with such authority that many were not aware he was almost blind.

Then something amazing happened to him on this day in 1882. He was alone in his church when he felt God speaking to him. Words came flooding into his heart. He quickly wrote the words, and “the whole work was completed in five minutes.” He later described how the words seemed to be dictated to him “by some inward voice.”

This poem eventually became a popular hymn, “O Love that Wilt Not Let Me Go.” God had given him a message about love. He felt the message was important, and he never felt the need to edit the text.

Because of God’s love, we can rest our “weary souls” in Him. We can experience His “ocean depths” of blessing and, as a result, our lives will be richer and fuller. Matheson wrote about the joy that sought him through pain and light that followed him all his life. How could he not respond to love like this?

Remember that God loves you no matter what you have done. You can trust Him. Let Him use you to spread His supernatural love to others.

Reflection Question: Are you living as the beloved of God?
