Living a Life of Compassion

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Living a life of compassion means using your time, talents, and treasures to reflect God’s love and care for others.

“In case a countryman of yours becomes poor … you are to sustain him … Fear your God, so that your countryman may live with you. You shall not give him your silver at interest, nor your food for profit.”—Leviticus 25:35–37 NASB

As God’s people prepared to enter the Promised Land, He reminded them of the importance of compassion. They were to be compassionate to everyone—family members, neighbors, fellow citizens. They were to help the poor and provide for their needs.

To put this into context, God reminded them that they all had been slaves in Egypt. No one had property or possessions there. God delivered them and provided for them. He gave them the land of Canaan, and they owed everything to Him!

God reminded them that all the land and everything in it belonged to Him. They were only “strangers and residents with Me” (v. 23). As His guests, He expected them to be good stewards. He wanted them to be His instruments in helping others and showing them His love, care, and concern. He wanted them to realize that He had blessed them so they could be a blessing to others (Genesis 12:2).

This spirit of compassion did not just apply to possessions and resources, but also to their time and spiritual gifts. They were to live as Jesus taught His disciples: “Freely you received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

Today, ask God to help you be a person of compassion. Remember that “the Lord is full of compassion” (James 5:11). Particularly during this Christmas season, be ready to show God’s love and care for the many who are in need.

Reflection Question: How can you show God’s compassion to someone in need this week?
