Learning from the Fruit of Disobedience

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Moses’ story reveals the fruit of disobedience—missed blessings and lasting consequences—reminding us to honor and obey God’s Word.

“The LORD was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the LORD said to me, ‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again.’”—Deuteronomy 3:26

Moses had often heard the voice of God. He knew the power of His Word and the consequences of disobedience. But he forgot when the Israelites complained about no water.

God directed him to “tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water,” but, instead, Moses “struck the rock with his staff twice” (Numbers 20:8–11). To God, this was disobedience, and it could not be justified. As a result, Moses wasn’t allowed to enter the Promised Land.

Moses argued with God, hoping He would change His mind. But when he kept arguing, God became angry and told him to stop. It was time to accept His decision and move on. He needed to face the consequences of his actions.

Throughout his life, Moses had many honest conversations with God—admitting his concerns, voicing his questions. But this was different: The matter was decided.

We may face times like this. Yes, God wants us to be bold and persistent in prayer, like the widow who bothered an unjust judge until he gave in (Luke 18), or like Jacob who wrestled with God (Genesis 32).

But we also need to realize that He is God Almighty, sovereign, and holy. His standards are eternal. His judgments are everlasting. His Word is final, and some things are not subject to debate.

Today, make sure you know God’s Word. Make it the basis of your life.
