Joy Amid Persecution

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Paul and Barnabas found joy amid persecution, showing us how the Holy Spirit empowers us to stay bold and joyful even in adversity.

“The disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”—Acts 13:52 NASB

There was a great move of God, and “nearly all the city” in Perga came “to hear the word of the Lord.” But, seeing the crowd, some of the Jewish leaders “were filled with jealousy” (vs. 44–45). They began spreading rumors and insulting them.

In the face of this opposition, Paul and Barnabas continued to speak “bravely” (v. 46). They also began to refocus their energy: Citing Isaiah, they moved on to be “a light for the Gentiles” (v. 47).

As the Gospel “spread all over this region” (v. 49), opposition intensified. Their enemies persuaded leaders in the community to bring strong persecution, and soon they had no choice but to leave Perga.

This persecution could have caused Paul and Barnabas to be discouraged, angry, or frustrated. Instead, they were “continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.” Though people persecuted them, they still celebrated in the Spirit. They left Perga victorious!

We, too, can face opposition. Our enemies spread rumors and say insulting things. They try to silence us or convince others to reject the Gospel. But, like Paul and Barnabas, we must stay faithful to God’s call and continually draw on the power of the Holy Spirit.

He is with you. He can turn defeat into victory and give you joy in any circumstance. Draw on His strength and celebrate having the Holy Spirit in your life.

Reflection Question: How can I stay joyful when I face rejection or pushback for my faith?

Prayer
Father, thank You for the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life. Fill me with Your joy and peace in every circumstance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
