Intimacy

Using the language of romantic love, Solomon described a relationship of intimacy between a man and woman. Each belonged to the other. Paul made a similar point when he wrote “The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does” (1 Corinthians 7:4).

Both Paul and Solomon described a relationship of mutual commitment. As each person recognizes that, to be complete, they needed the partner God provided for them.

These words describe the kind of relationship that God wants for a marriage. For a man and woman. But the ultimate expression is of the relationship that God wants for His people. A relationship that He desires with each of us. He wants us to realize that we completely belong to Him. But, at the same time, in mysterious way, He belongs to us.

We see this truth described in the many covenants God had with his people. But each covenant had two parts. As He told the children of Israel, “Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine“ (Exodus 19:5).

The Bible makes clear that this is the kind of relationship God wants with each of us. A relationship of faithfulness and commitment. Fidelity and loyalty. A relationship in which we understand that we belong to Him, but He also is committed to us.

Today, remember that God wants you to have this kind of intimate relationship with Him. Remember that you belong to Him, but that He also is yours. Your life cannot be complete without Him. Seek Him with your whole being. He longs to demonstrate His love for you.
