Individual Choices

The memories must have been vivid. Samuel certainly recalled when, as a boy, he heard God call his name. In this unforgettable moment, he learned that God wasn’t a character from history but very real. That He was with him all the time. That His Word was true.

We can be sure that Samuel shared this story with his sons. How he had been dedicated to God by his mother, and learned to hear His voice. How God called him for a special assignment. Why they needed to learn these lessons in their own lives.

Perhaps Samuel assumed that his sons would follow his example and serve God faithfully. But in spite of all he taught them, sadly they “did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain.”

Instead of using their position to bless God’s people, they pursued personal profit and became examples of dishonesty and corruption. The people of Israel were so offended
that they asked for a king, which seemed preferable to being ruled by Samuel’s sons.

Their actions remind us that each of us is an individual. Regardless of what we are taught, we still must make our own decisions and are accountable before God.

These truths are demonstrated throughout the Bible. The children of Israel learned these lessons in their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. The Israelites often were reminded of these truths, particularly when they forgot God’s laws and went their own way.

In your life, remember not to rest on your past. Remember God’s call on you. Remember that you will reap what you have Sown. What are you doing with your life? With the resources He has given you?
