When Obedience Makes No Sense

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Buying a field in a collapsing city seemed absurd, yet Jeremiah obeyed. When obedience makes no sense reminds us that God’s plans reach beyond our sight.

“After I had given the deed of purchase … I prayed … ‘Ah, LORD God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.’”—Jeremiah 32:16–17

Jeremiah could not understand what God had called him to do. He knew that nothing was too hard for Him and that He was “great in counsel and mighty in deed” (v. 19). But God had asked him to buy a field at a time when “the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans” (v. 24). This made no sense to Jeremiah.

The Lord had not made a mistake: He had purposely chosen to allow events to unfold in this way. He had a plan that Jeremiah could not understand. By buying the land in Judah, he was giving a sign of God’s continuing love and long-range plans. Despite the present circumstances, He had not abandoned His people!

We often react just like Jeremiah when we’re surprised by the way our lives unfold … when we go through situations that don’t make sense … when we’re puzzled by God’s commands … when we have doubts and questions.

At times like these, we can follow Jeremiah’s example and be honest with God. He would rather we talk with Him than grumble to others. But in every circumstance, we need to remember that He is Almighty God and we can trust Him.

Commit your way to the Lord and let Him direct your steps. Remember the importance of obedience. He can do all things. Demonstrate that you believe this. Put your faith in Him.

Reflection Question: How do you respond when God’s directions feel confusing?
