Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

“On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.’” John 12:12-13 NASB

Jeanette Threlfall faced great adversities. Born in 1821 in Blackburn, England, she was orphaned as a youngster. An accident left her a lifelong invalid. Yet, in spite of these tragedies, nothing seemed to discourage her or keep her from serving God.

It is said that she radiated cheerfulness and courage, never drawing attention to herself. Instead of moping or complaining, she wrote poems and hymns.

In 1873, as she pondered the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, she wrote a poem called “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.” She described how little children sang hosannas: “Through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang.” Focusing on Jesus, they sang praises!

She wrote of “an exultant crowd” that chanted clearly and loudly. And she pictured how glorious it would have been to join in the chorus, singing “Hosanna in the highest!” We can sing “for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King. O may we ever praise Him with heart and life and voice, and in His blissful presence eternally rejoice!”

This poem became a hymn that is still sung in many churches. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of worship, and all the reasons we have to celebrate.

Today, don’t be dominated by worries, cares, or burdens. Focus on Jesus! Thank Him for dying for your sins. Praise Him for being resurrected from the dead. Worship Him for His promises and leaving to prepare an eternal home for you. Dedicate your life to serving Him. Sing and shout, “Hosanna in the highest!” He is worthy of all praise!

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, You are my King, Savior, and Lord. I worship You. Thank You for all that You have done for me. May my life bring You praise and glory. In Your name. Amen.
