Hope in the Lord

Jeremiah, the writer of Lamentations, experienced many moments of sorrow and difficulty. He was called to deliver prophecies that led to persecution and rejection. There were times when he wondered why God had given these burdens. It’s for good reason that he’s been called the “weeping prophet.”

But as Jeremiah turned to God, he gained a new perspective on his life and all that he’d been through. Instead of thinking about his problems, he began to think about the mercy of God. He realized that “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning” (vs. 22-23).

Even when circumstances changed and he faced uncertainties, Jeremiah realized that God’s faithfulness was great; His “lovingkindnesses indeed never cease” (v. 22).

Jeremiah realized he had hope because God remembered him. He did not have to be discouraged or worried. “‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I have hope in Him’” (v. 24). In other words, Jeremiah had realized that God was sovereign, no matter how things might appear. His wisdom was greater than the wisdom of any person. He could be trusted. He controlled events and the territory in which Jeremiah traveled.

As these truths became clearer to him, Jeremiah realized he had hope. He could humble himself before God. He could stop worrying and start trusting. He could have confidence and peace because God was with him, and because he knew that God was faithful and compassionate.

This is the same confidence that we can have as we go through the challenges of life.

Today, in every circumstance of your life, remember that you can hope in God. He still is sovereign over all the earth. Don’t carry burdens, but trust in Him. He is faithful every day.
