Hearts Overflowing

Daily Devotional•3 Minutes

When did you last sing to God simply because your heart was too full to stay quiet? Ephesians 5 says that overflow is what worship is made of.

“Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” (Ephesians 5:18–19).

Revival had broken out in Virginia during the 1780s. People came from throughout America to hear the preaching of God’s Word and be cleansed from sin. Though they were from many backgrounds, they were united in seeking God.

In his account of this revival, John Leland described how God’s people expressed their love through song. How wonderful it was “to hear the sweet singing among the people, when they make melody in their hearts and voices to the Lord.”

The preaching was powerful, but “in some places, singing was more blessed.” People started to sing before they arrived, and they went home singing.

Leland wrote that during the services, “as soon as preaching is over, it is common to sing a number of spiritual songs; sometimes several songs are sounding at the same time, in different parts of the congregation.” People could not help but sing to the Lord.

Singing to the Lord is a central part of worship. As we’re filled with the Spirit, we overflow with praise. We can’t help but sing—spiritual songs, choruses, mighty hymns—and our musical skills matter less than the commitment of our hearts. No matter what we’ve been going through in life, our entire being can center on God in worship. Wholeheartedly sing to Him today and make melody in your heart.

Reflection Question: What is your favorite time or place to sing praises to the Lord?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a good singer for worship to “count”?

No—Ephesians 5:19 says to make melody with your heart, not with a trained voice. The posture of the heart, not vocal skill, is what Scripture emphasizes.

What’s the connection between being “filled with the Spirit” and singing?

Paul links the two directly—spontaneous praise is presented as a natural overflow of being filled with the Spirit, not a separate, additional task.

How can I build a habit of singing to God outside of church?

Try starting or ending your day with one song of genuine praise—in the car, at home, or while working—as a small, repeatable way to redirect your heart toward God.
