Mysterious Ophir

Is there something you’ve chased for years without ever feeling satisfied? Solomon’s obsession with the gold of Ophir has a warning worth hearing.

“Hiram … sent to him … ships and servants familiar with the sea, and they went to Ophir together with the servants of Solomon and brought from there 450 talents of gold and brought it to King Solomon” (2 Chronicles 8:18).

Ophir – a place of mystery. Was it located in Africa? The Arabian Peninsula? India? Today, no one knows for sure. But it was well known in Bible times. A thousand years before Christ, ships traveled hundreds of miles at sea to this faraway land.

Job 22:24 describes Ophir as a place associated with gold. King David gained riches from Ophir, providing 3,000 talents “of the gold of Ophir” to help build the Temple (1 Chronicles 29:3–4).

Ophir and its gold became a kind of obsession with Solomon. He arranged for Hiram, king of Tyre, to provide ships and seamen for a journey to Ophir. Together with Solomon’s servants, they returned with an unbelievable amount of gold: in modern terms, over 15 metric tons!

The kings that followed Solomon continued to be attracted to the riches found in Ophir. We read, for example, how “Jehoshaphat made ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, but they did not go, for the ships were wrecked at Ezion-geber” (1 Kings 22:48).

It can be easy for all of us to have places that become fascinations, objects that dominate our thoughts, experiences we crave. But the Bible tells us that all of these things are like “chasing the wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:17 NLT).

Don’t spend your life trying to amass the temporary things of this world. Seek riches that will last for eternity: Invest in the Kingdom of God!

Reflection Question: What obsessions have you had in the past and now?

Frequently Asked Questions

Where was Ophir actually located?

Its exact location is one of the Bible’s enduring mysteries. Proposals include the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and India, but no site has been conclusively identified.

Is it wrong to enjoy wealth or nice things?

No—Scripture doesn’t condemn resources themselves. It warns against letting the pursuit of them become an obsession that crowds out trust in God.

What’s a practical way to check if something has become an “obsession” in my life?

Ask whether you can hold it loosely—could you thank God and let it go if He asked? Difficulty answering yes is often a sign it’s taken more room than it should.
