God’s Glory

The Bible promises that one day “the earth will be filled with the glory of the Lord” (Numbers 14:21, Psalm 72:19, Habakkuk 2:14). This sounds like a glorious celebration and a wondrous event! But the first time God made this promise, it actually was part of a warning of judgment.

After hearing from the spies who journeyed into the Promised Land, the Israelites grumbled and even considered returning to Egypt. God pardoned them. However, these men had seen His glory, yet had put Him “to the test these ten times” and not listened to His voice. As a result, they wouldn’t see the Promised Land.

They failed to understand God’s character. He is holy! Completely righteous! Perfect in purity.

When Isaiah saw the Lord, he reacted, “Woe is me…I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips” (Isaiah 6:1-5). God later told Isaiah, “I am the LORD, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another” (Isaiah 42:8).

In the wilderness, the Israelites failed to understand these truths and so disqualified themselves from receiving God’s full blessings. They never would experience His glory. But Caleb was different—he had “a different spirit” and followed God “fully.”

Truly, the day is coming when “all the earth will be filled with the glory of the LORD.” To those like Caleb who love and serve Him, this will be a great day. But this promise also contains a warning for those who grumble, deny Him, and reject His Word.
