Ruth’s Turnaround Story

Ruth’s turnaround story shows how faithfulness and integrity open doors for God’s favor to rewrite our stories in ways we never imagined.

“Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today” (Ruth 3:18).

Naomi and her family had left Israel for Moab, hoping to escape a drought. But after her husband and two sons died, she returned to Israel with only her daughter-in-law, Ruth, a Moabite woman with no knowledge of Jewish laws or customs.

Desperate, Ruth went gleaning for grain in a field that belonged to Boaz, a wealthy man who was related to Naomi. Obeying Naomi’s instructions, Ruth followed the customs of the time, and Boaz recognized that she was acting with honor and humility. He knew of her reputation as a “worthy woman” (v. 11).

Boaz was ready to make Ruth his bride, but he knew that another man was a closer relative. He told her that he would approach the man and find out whether he would “redeem” her (v. 13). Boaz was a man of his word, and the matter was settled that very day.

The marriage of Boaz and Ruth demonstrates just how quickly God can turn around any situation. Both Boaz and Ruth had done their part. These kinds of people are prepared for God’s blessings—faithful, good stewards, committed to excellence, trustworthy, and maintaining good reputations.

Seek to develop these character traits in your own life. Be so dependable that others can count on you. Be honorable and trustworthy. Don’t just talk, but keep your word. Then trust God to direct your steps and provide for your needs.
