God and the Whirlwind

Both of the times that God spoke to Job, He spoke out of the “whirlwind” (here and Job 40:6). The Hebrew word suggests a strong wind, even like a hurricane. The same word is used when Elijah was taken up into Heaven (2 Kings 2:1).

The whirlwind provides important insights about God, and His nature. This physical force has unimaginable power and energy. It can appear to be out of control, spinning and turning, ready to cause destruction.

But whirlwinds also suggests mystery. All we really can see is the violent motion, and don’t know where these storms are going, or what they will impact.

Job certainly felt that his life must have been hit by a whirlwind. Everything had been uprooted. His mind spun with questions and uncertainty. But God made clear that He was at the center of this whirlwind, perfectly in control.

But the presence of the whirlwind helped Job realize how little he really knew and how insignificant he was compared with God. Before Him, we really are helpless, in awe of His power and magnificence.

Jesus used a similar analogy when He told Nicodemus, “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit” (John 3:8).

This whirlwind also symbolizes God’s judgment. Those who please Him, have nothing to fear. But judgment is inevitable for those who displease Him. On the nations who violate His Word. On people who defy Him.

In your life, learn to depend on God. To have faith in Him. To look to Him to make sense of life. To teach and guide you. And remember that you serve a God who speaks out of the midst of the whirlwinds. He is awesome! Humble yourself before Him. Trust Him. Serve Him.
