Freedom!

Born in 1714 in a small community in southwest England, Howell Harris grew up in a humble home where everyone was expected to attend church. Although his education was limited, he was able to secure a position as a schoolmaster.

Harris considered himself to be a Christian. But on Palm Sunday 1735, he suddenly realized that something was missing in his life. As he attended the Parish Church at Talgarth a short distance from his home, the vicar announced that there would be a communion service the next Sunday. However, emphasizing Paul’s words about communion in 1 Corinthians 11, he warned them that they needed to be “fit” and ready, taking communion seriously.

This message made a deep impact on Harris. He wondered if he truly was “fit.” The question occupied his mind throughout the week. Then, sitting in church the next Sunday, it was as if the light burst into his heart. He suddenly understood!

Harris realized all that Jesus had done for him, shedding His blood that he might be free from sin and guilt. He later recalled, “Strength was given to me to believe that I was receiving pardon on account of that blood. I lost my burden; I went home leaping for joy.”

Harris finally was free! He dedicated his life to helping others experience that same freedom, and he became a leader in the revivals that swept throughout Wales.

Many professing Christians today do not have that degree of freedom. They may go to church, but they don’t have an intimate personal relationship with Christ. And they still carry unnecessary burdens and guilt. But remember: Jesus came that we might be set free!
