Focus on the Heart

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

For centuries, the focus had been on physical actions. After all, the Law had said, “You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14). Then, Jesus changed the focus. He wanted us to realize that the real concern should be what we see, think, and feel. Our inner lives. Our hearts.

Jesus was surrounded by people who focused on the external. These “hypocrites” appeared to be religious, but were “full of extortion and self-indulgence.” His direction? Clean the inside first, “so that the outside of them may be clean also” (Matthew 23:25-26).

He wanted us to realize that it is what is in our hearts that controls what we say, “for the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart” (Matthew 12:34). Our focus should be on our thoughts and attitudes, and our relationship with God, not the reaction of other people.

He wanted us to focus, not on the superficial or quick fixes, but the steps necessary to address the root of our problems. By referring to eyes and hands, Jesus was demonstrating that correcting action may be painful and difficult. We need to be willing to put aside anything that separates us from God, causes problems, and blocks His blessings.

We need to be open to His leading and the conviction of His Spirit, ready to make the changes that He calls us to make. In our habits and thoughts. Our lifestyle and actions. And we need to be sure that He has first place in our lives. That we are seeking first His Kingdom (Matthew 6:33). That there are no other gods before Him (Exodus 20:3).

In your life, seek to be clean in God’s sight. Seek to make Him your highest priority.
