Fierce Wolves

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Paul warned the Ephesians about fierce wolves—spiritual attacks that can come even from within, calling us to stay alert and grounded in truth.

“Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers … Savage wolves will come in … from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away the disciples after them.”—Acts 20:28–30 NASB

The church in Ephesus was dear to Paul, and his last visit with its leaders was an emotional time. In his final message, he reminded them that they were in a spiritual war. He warned that people would come like “fierce wolves” to attack them (ESV). Sadly, some attacks would come from other Christians seeking to divide the church and gain followers for themselves.

This same message is important today for every pastor, church leader, and believer. Every Christian must expect attacks and realize that they may come from many sources and in many ways—from the world as well as from within the church.

But what is the ultimate source of these attacks? The devil. Jesus said Satan was like a “wolf [who] attacks them and scatters the flock” (John 10:12 NLT). He’s on the prowl, seeking to sow discord and strife, spread rumors and gossip, and trick us into believing his lies and doubting God. Like a wolf, he looks for those who are weak and vulnerable, seeking to strike when and where we least expect it.

Make sure you heed this warning. Realize that you are in a spiritual war. With God’s help, you can be ready. Commit yourself to Him and His Word. Be filled with the Holy Spirit and draw on His power. “Resist him [the devil], firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9 CSB). Trust God, and He will strengthen and protect you.

Reflection Question: How can I stay spiritually alert when unexpected attacks come?
