Encouragement

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Paul knew the power of encouragement; faith grows stronger when we uplift one another. Stay rooted in God’s Word and strengthen those around you.

“Therefore … we thought it best to be left behind, alone at Athens, and we sent Timothy … to strengthen and encourage you for the benefit of your faith, so that no one would be disturbed by these afflictions.”1 Thessalonians 3:1–3 NASB

Paul cared deeply about the Thessalonians. In the midst of his difficulties, he described his afflictions and problems to them by using a Greek word that suggested there was a kind of appointment to these trials. Since he regretfully couldn’t get away from Athens, he felt compelled to send Timothy to visit them in his place.

Timothy was sent to check on the Thessalonians and confirm that they were continuing to stand strong in their faith. Paul was greatly encouraged by Timothy’s glowing report. The church’s faithfulness brought him joy and thanksgiving. He felt strengthened in his purpose, knowing that they were thriving in the Lord even in his absence. He committed himself to pray for them, night and day.

Remembering that their labor had been prompted by love (1:3), Paul prayed, “May the Lord cause you to increase and overflow in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you” (3:12).

He prayed they would have strength to live the Christian life and be “blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints” (3:13). He knew that God wanted them to stay focused – not sidetracked by any person or situation.

Today, remember what you have been taught and be strengthened in your faith. Fill your life with God’s Word and walk in His ways. Continue to grow in His love.
