God Lifts Up the Humble Heart

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

The humble heart God lifts up follows Mary’s example—embracing humility so He can pour out His blessings.

“He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones, and has exalted those who were humble.”—Luke 1:51–52 NASB

Pregnant with the baby Jesus, Mary realized many amazing things. In her “Magnificat,” she expressed how honored she felt at being chosen to be the mother of the Son of God. She saw with crystal clarity that God is holy and merciful.

Her mind turned to the importance of humility. She saw how she was His “bond-servant;” how He had regard for her “humble state;” how He has exalted those who were humble; how “He has brought down rulers from their thrones” and “scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their hearts” (vs. 46–55).

These revelations point to a key secret of Christmas. The Bible tells us, “The Lord will tear down the house of the proud” (Proverbs 15:25). “Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord” (Proverbs 16:5). If we humble ourselves in His presence, He will exalt us (James 4:10).

We see these truths in action during that first Christmas. We see them in Mary’s declaration and in Jesus’ humble birth in a stable. We see the importance of humility as the angels announced His birth to lowly shepherds while King Herod the Great knew nothing when the magi approached him.

This Christmas, think about the importance of humility in your life. If you desire God’s blessings and want Him to exalt you, humble yourself before Him. Make Him the Lord of your life.

Reflection Question: How can you practice humility in a God-honoring way this week?
