Dwelling Among Us

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Dwelling Among Us points to the wonder of Jesus tabernacling with us—and how His presence still abides through the Holy Spirit.

“The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”—John 1:14 NASB

Jesus was “the Word,” present from “the beginning … with God” (v. 1). But He also “became flesh” and “dwelt among us.” He was fulfilling the plan of God—His dwelling was directly related to the Law and the establishment of the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23).

In the original Greek, this connection is clear, as the word translated dwelt means to have a tabernacle, from a root word meaning tent or tabernacle.

In the Feast of Tabernacles, God’s people were to remember His care for them in the wilderness and celebrate His Presence with them in every situation. Then Jesus came to literally tabernacle with them, showing them what the Father was like and how to live.

A further step came when God sent the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to abide with us and “teach [us] all things” (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit was given to guide us, fill us with spiritual fruit, and empower us to do mighty things.

The messages of the Feast of Tabernacles are still important: Remember all God has done for you. Recognize this world is not your home. Trust in God, rather than in people, possessions, or things.

Remember, God is with you in every situation. He has taken care of you in the past, and He will continue today and throughout eternity. Be filled with the Spirit and let Him guide and direct you.

Reflection Question: How does knowing Jesus dwells with you change your perspective?
