Divisions

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

The warning in “Divisions” reveals how disunity can dismantle even the strongest foundations, calling believers to pursue unity in Christ above all

“I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.”1 Corinthians 1:10 NASB

From their home in southern Mesopotamia, the Sumerians became one of history’s first superpowers. Their empire gradually expanded as far as the Mediterranean Sea.

Some have called Sargon, one of their leaders, “the first world conqueror” after he gained control of Sumer in the twenty-third century BC. Throughout his reign, Sargon not only had to defend his empire from invaders, but he also battled constant rebellion within his borders. Eventually, this lack of unity contributed to Sumer’s fall, despite its many strengths and resources.

Disunity can destroy any country, organization, marriage—and even the body of Christ. This is why Paul warned us about the devastating consequences of division. He urged the Corinthians to eliminate rivalries and instead seek unity. He wanted them to seek God’s Kingdom and work together to pursue the same goals.

The Bible teaches that the more Christians are united, the greater impact they will have in changing the world. Jesus showed the importance of this principle when He prayed that “they may all be one … so that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:20–21).

Ask God to help you seek the unity of Christ’s body. Strive to be in the same mind with your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Reflection Question: What’s one way you can promote unity in your church this week?
