Claude Johnson’s first visit to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was in 1919. Dazzled by the sound, he particularly was overwhelmed with the grandeur of the organ. It was a life-changing moment.

His focus was drawn like a magnet to the man seated at the organ: Marcel Dupré, cathedral organist. His playing “was very much better than anything I had ever heard before,” Johnson recalled.

Surrounding Dupré were more than a dozen disciples, who viewed him with “undisguised awe and admiration.” Clearly, they marveled at his skills: “The music flows under his agile hands and feet, which move over the keys and pedals without any apparent effort.”

Born on this day in Rouen, France, in 1886, Dupré gained attention after playing the complete organ works of J.S. Bach from memory in a series of concerts. But perhaps most impressive was the way he became an inspiration to young people. More than just admirers, several of his pupils becoming world-famous organists and composers, inspired by his example.

Great teachers can be an inspiration to their pupils. We can picture the disciples of Jesus, sitting around the Master, listening, asking questions, and learning. Through their lives, they provide a powerful example for each of us.

Remember that Jesus is ready to teach you and be your inspiration. Spend quality time with Him in prayer. Ask Him for wisdom and understanding. Read His Word. Then, seek to be an example to others.
