Deceitful Fantasies

Miguel de Cervantes experienced great diversity in his life. Born in Spain on this day in 1547, he was a tax collector, military man, and even a slave. But he is best remembered as the author of Don Quixote, considered the first modern novel.

This book tells the story of an elderly knight whose mind was filled with images from romances. He lived in a world created in his imagination, fueled by stories that he wished were true. So he set out to seek adventure with his pragmatic assistant, Sancho Panza.

In a famous scene, Quixote thought he saw giants, but Sancho helped him to see reality: “What we see there are not giants but windmills, and what seem to be their arms are the vanes that turned by the wind make the millstone go.”

Many people today spend their lives chasing after “windmills.” Some become absorbed by the stories and characters created by movies, television, and novels. Others spend their lives obsessed by gambling and computer games. Many Christians become trapped by deceptive doctrines. As Jeremiah prophesied, many dream up their own interpretations of what they think God’s Word says.

Today, seek to be free of these kind of deceptions. Dedicate your life to serving God and advancing His Kingdom. Do not get caught up in fantasies, deceptions, and distractions that can absorb your time and resources. Make sure you are basing your life on the timeless truths of Scripture—with God’s perspective and the right priorities.
