Crying Out by the Roadside

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Crying Out by the Roadside shows how Bartimaeus’ bold persistence stopped Jesus in His tracks—and faith opened his eyes to new life.

“As he was leaving Jericho … Bartimaeus, a blind beggar … was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’”—Mark 10:46–47

Two things defined the life of Bartimaeus: He was blind, and he was a beggar. That was all he knew. He seemed sentenced to a hopeless existence.

But, when he heard that Jesus was approaching, he began shouting for mercy. Others told him to be quiet, but Bartimaeus “cried out all the more” (v. 48). His persistence paid off as Jesus stopped and called for him.

Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” (v. 51) For Bartimaeus, this was the critical moment—the time to dare to believe, to ask for the one thing that could totally change his life: “Let me recover my sight!” That was all Jesus needed to hear. He responded, “Go your way; your faith has made you well,” and immediately, Bartimaeus regained his sight! (vs. 51–52)

Today, many are physically blind or suffering from other ailments, but millions more are spiritually crippled. As a result, they spend their lives begging—unable to find fulfillment. In addition to being spiritually empty, they may be financially or emotionally poor as well.

But Jesus offers everyone the kind of complete turnaround that He provided for Bartimaeus. He will turn aside for those who are unwavering in their determination to receive a breakthrough.

Call out to God and be persistent. Pray boldly. In faith, ask for big things—the things that can change your life and change the world.
