The Cry for Independence

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

The human heart cries out for independence, to “do our own thing.” In his memoirs, historian Edward Gibbon wrote that independence was “the first of earthly blessings.” Indeed, independence can be wonderful: the excitement of young people leaving home for the first time, or the relief when a debt is paid, a weighty problem is solved, or a trial ends.

God wants us to be free. But He also wants us to realize that pursuing independence can become a snare! Independence isn’t always a good thing. In fact, sin first came into the world when Satan asserted his independence from God and cleverly persuaded Adam and Eve to follow him.

Many people today say they’re Christians and love God, but their lives are full of rebellion and disobedience. In their own way, they are like Saul, who felt free to interpret God’s Word in any way he wanted. Saul didn’t understand that God honors those who obey Him unconditionally. But Samuel taught him, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” Rebellion, in God’s sight, is just as bad as witchcraft or serving demons. Independence cost Saul his crown and, eventually, his life.

Today, make sure to declare your full dependence on God. Submit yourself to Him (James 4:7). Only then can you truly be free from the devil’s foothold in your life: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Be on guard against false freedom. Make Jesus your Lord, and serve Him in everything you do.
