Conditional Promises

God promised great things for Israel even before they entered the Promised Land…if they would diligently obey Him and if they were “being careful to do all His commandments which I command you.” He promised prosperity and protection, favor and health, abundance and peace, victory and success, and freedom from fear.

But, as with all His covenant promises, there were conditions: If they failed to observe these commandments and served other gods, they would experience curses, both in the city and the country. Their crops wouldn’t grow. They would feel confused and experience sickness and famine. There would be drought, and they would be “defeated before your enemies.” Instead of being bold, they would flee from their enemies. They would “grope” for direction “as the blind man gropes in darkness” (Deuteronomy 28).

When the Israelites did the wrong things, they were delivered into the hands of Midian. God’s people were so terrified that they retreated into dens and caves. They learned how disobedience separates people from the Lord and leads to fear, while obedience results in confidence and boldness.

For Israel, everything changed when they called out to God (vs.7-8), acknowledged their sins, and humbled themselves before Him. He raised up Gideon to be their deliverer, and for a season, they were free.

Remember: The key is to turn to God. Humble yourself and confess your sins. Commit yourself to obeying Him and His Word. Ask Him for boldness and courage.
