Comfort

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Comfort” reminds us of God’s tender heart toward His people. He doesn’t just correct us; He longs to bring peace, restoration, and rest to our souls.

“’Comfort My people,’ says your God. ‘Speak kindly to Jerusalem; and call out to her, that her warfare has ended, that her guilt has been removed, that she has received of the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.’”Isaiah 40:1–2 NASB

Reading the opening words of Isaiah 40 conveys peace … even just the first word: comfort. It reveals God’s deep desire to bless His children.

Yes, His people sinned. God warned and judged them, but He wanted them to have hope and receive His comfort.

God instructed the prophet to “speak kindly to Jerusalem.” Although there had been intense warfare, struggle, and weariness, God wanted Judah to know “that her warfare has ended,” and her guilt “has been removed.” She already received “double for all her sins,” and God promised coming double blessings, abundance, and peace.

In these words, we can feel God’s compassionate heart that longs to bless us rather than send judgment. He wants us to be comforted and consoled, at peace and at rest, and receive all the riches He has prepared for us.

Paul picked up this theme when writing to the church at Corinth: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3). If you’re struggling and in need of encouragement, remember that your Heavenly Father is a God of comfort!

Call on His name, let Him take away your burdens and give you His peace. He will give you the comfort, grace, and mercy you need!

Reflection Question: Where do you need to receive God’s comfort and peace today?
