Idols

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In a world full of distractions, idols can quietly take God’s place—this devotion helps refocus your heart on what truly lasts.

“Those who fashion an idol are all futile, and their treasured things are of no benefit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be put to shame.”—Isaiah 44:9 NASB

Idols can be anything we worship and honor—people, things, possessions, experiences, riches, careers, hobbies, pleasures, or entertainment.

People can lose perspective and allow such things to become objects of worship—the focus of their lives. But no matter how great the rewards may be, worldly pursuits are only temporary. Eventually, the luster will fade, and the experience will end.

The Bible tells us that the makers of idols are “futile.” The Hebrew word is the same word used in Genesis 1:2 to describe the earth before creation (translated “without form”). They are deceived, pursuing a vast emptiness. Despite any perceived benefits, they have foolishly committed their lives to things that won’t last.

In contrast, God is our Creator. He has existed throughout eternity: “I am the first and I am the last, and there is no God besides Me” (v. 6).

God is with us throughout our lives. He sees everything from the perspective of eternity and works to accomplish what is best for us, rather than supplying only the temporary gratifications promoted in the world. He reminds us that He is holy. His words are true. He is the solid Rock upon whom we can stand.

Today, make sure you don’t serve idols or worship the work of human hands. Seek the God who spoke the world into existence. He knows the end from the beginning. Place your trust in Him.

Reflection Question: What are you tempted to elevate above God in your daily life?
