Celebrating on Mount Zion

Standing before Mount Zion reminds us that we’re part of God’s eternal celebration—filled with angels, joy, and His unshakable Kingdom.

“You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven.”—Hebrews 12:22–23 NASB

Hebrews provides a contrast between two mountains. First, we’re reminded of Mount Sinai, where the Law was given. This is a place where even Moses was “terrified and trembling” (v. 21). But everything is different on Mount Zion, “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.”

Here we see believers from every era. The Bible describes a “general assembly.” The Greek word here describes a festive occasion, a time when angels join believers in a celebration that never ends! It’s a time of uninterrupted rejoicing and worship.

This is the mountain we have come to. Through eyes of faith, we see this heavenly multitude of believers praising God! They’re encouraging us to endure and not give up and realize that everything we go through for Jesus is worth it.

This picture also helps us realize the joy we can experience! We can celebrate because Jesus is “the mediator of a new covenant” (v. 24). Through Him, we have complete access to God! We’re forgiven, cleansed, and healed! We’re freed from sin and fear. We’ve been given access to the power of God, and we have authority over our enemy!

Picture yourself there—standing before Mount Zion with the angels and believers from all generations. Allow the joy of the Lord to fill your heart and take away your burdens. You’re in a place of utter joy. There’s no reason to fret—God wants you to celebrate and rejoice!
