The world seems to champion the Darwinian concept of survival of the fittest. Many believe that this attitude is essential to success. That we must strive to get the credit. Manipulate circumstances for our own advantage. Do whatever it takes to get ahead. But the Bible gives a completely different perspective.

The world focuses on “silver and gold,” but the Bible says that, instead, we should focus on securing “a good name.” This means being honest, dependable, and trustworthy. Doing quality work. Being people of integrity who seek to honor God and have a servant attitude. Others may make it their priority to seek “silver and gold,” but the Bible tells us that favor is better.

The Bible also teaches that “the reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life.” We should not be “sluggards” but diligent people, working with excellence, seeking to be faithful in everything we do. We should guard ourselves, and avoid “thorns and snares” by being careful about our associations. We should learn the importance of planning ahead, and develop a passion for learning.

The world may encourage us to think about ourselves first, but the Bible says the opposite is true. To seek first God’s Kingdom but also realize that “he who is generous will be blessed.”

In the world, people look to tear others down to build themselves up. But the Bible says that we should love purity and not be ruthless but forgiving. Seeking to encourage, not discourage. Above all, we should seek to please God, knowing that this gives us boldness and the confidence to live by faith.

These principles, all developed from Proverbs 22, are true in every situation. At work or at home. In finances and relationships. They should be our foundation, and define how we approach every task. Every situation.
