Being True Ministers of God

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Being true ministers of God means setting aside self-interest and enduring hardship, so our lives point others to the Gospel, not ourselves.

“We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God.”—2 Corinthians 6:3–4 NKJV

We can marvel at the purity of Paul’s motivation. His constant goal was to serve the Lord and be used by Him in any way He desired. He gave himself as a living sacrifice, devoid of any self-interest. He refused to be defensive, concerned about his own reputation, or worried whether he would receive credit, fame, or rewards.

Moreover, he was careful not to do anything that might hinder the impact of the Gospel. He maintained this mindset even when he was wronged or unjustly accused.

Throughout his life, Paul had experienced many tribulations—prison, shipwreck, beatings, distress, tumult, and sleepless nights. He had received both honor and dishonor, good reports and evil reports. He had been accused of being a deceiver even though he spoke the truth. He had felt sorrow, yet he was “always rejoicing.” He had been willing to have “nothing,” knowing that in Christ he possessed “all things” (vs. 4–10).

Through all these experiences, Paul demonstrated the essential trait of a true minister: a willingness to endure any situation to serve God.

As we think about Paul’s example, we can review our own lives and examine our motives. We must ask ourselves if we’re more concerned for the Gospel or our own comfort, rewards, honor, or reputation. What are the real motives for what we do?

In all things, remember that you are God’s ambassador, His representative, and a minister of the Gospel.

Reflection Question: Are your motives shaped more by God’s glory or personal recognition?

Prayer
Father, may my motives be pure. Be glorified in my life and help me remove anything that is a stumbling block to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
