Being Made Anew

The potter was not satisfied. He looked at the vessel he was creating, and concluded that it was “spoiled.” He could have left the vessel alone, accepting its flaws. But he elected to remake it into “another vessel.” Why? For one simple reason: This “pleased” the potter.

God was showing Jeremiah how He looks at people, organizations, and nations. He is the Potter, and we are the clay. His purposes became clear when He told Jeremiah, “Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” Just like the clay in the potter’s hand, “so are you in My hand” (v. 6).

As God revealed to Jeremiah, the work of the potter never stops. He looked at the vessel after the initial shaping process had already been done. The potter, at that point, decided to remake it “into another vessel.”

As we consider our lives, we might feel that our course is “fixed,” that we know what’s best and don’t need to change. But God wants us to understand that, throughout our lives, He remains the Potter. He reserves the right to “remake” our lives.

Today, remember that you still are clay and that God still is the Potter. No matter how old you are, or what you’ve done, He still has the right to point you in a new direction, shape you in a new way, or give you new challenges or assignments.

Don’t fight God, and don’t resist His leading. Instead, seek to stay humble and willing before Him, always submitting your life to Him. Seek to stay sensitive to the leading of His Spirit. Let Him shape you, and, if He pleases, reshape you.
