Beginning in Power

Beginning in Power

We can imagine what thoughts filled their minds. After Jesus was crucified, His disciples were afraid. They were filled with joy after His resurrection, but then He announced that He would be leaving them. They must have wondered what this would mean. Clearly, things would change.

Finally, the day arrived for His ascension. But before He left, Jesus told them that they would be “baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5). They would “receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (v. 8) and be His witnesses and do amazing things.

It was a powerful promise, but what exactly did it mean? What were they to do? Following His directions, they waited, praying and staying faithful, yet still unsure about the future.

Then suddenly, the Spirit fell. They experienced a power they had never imagined. They could do things that previously seemed impossible. Miracles took place. They could speak with boldness and clarity. And people by the thousands came into the Kingdom.

As this new year dawns, remember that you serve the same God who empowered those disciples. Don’t limit Him. Stay faithful and obey His Word. No matter what happened in the past, be ready for new things! New revelations. More wisdom and power. Greater miracles. Answers to prayer.

If there is sin in your life, let Him forgive you. If you are afraid or unsure, let Him give you freedom and confidence. Trust Him. Commit the future to Him. Make this a time of new beginnings!
