Abundant Provision From God

In 1621, Pilgrims sailing from England landed on Plymouth Rock in what is now Massachusetts. One of their first acts was to thank God for His blessings and protection. They had faced great difficulties, but as one Pilgrim wrote in a letter, “By the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.”

An even earlier American “thanksgiving” took place on December 4, 1619, when English settlers arrived in Virginia. They were required by their charter to commemorate their arrival in America with an annual day of thanksgiving.

These were the beginnings of a “thanksgiving” tradition in America. Yet the actual tradition began in the Old Testament. Before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, God warned that they would face many difficulties. But He promised to bless and provide for them: Their baskets would overflow, and their herds and flocks would be fertile. In fact, they would be blessed wherever they went, whatever they did.

To assure that they would be thankful, God commanded them to give thanksgiving offerings (Leviticus 7, 22:29). Thanksgiving continued to be central in their lives, and the Bible is filled with times to thank God and offer thanksgiving.

As you look back on your life, think about the many ways that God has blessed you. You can trust in Him to provide for you, today and for the rest of your life. Give Him thanks for all He’s done! He is worthy!
