A Trusted Servant

“I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch…who signed the deed of purchase, before all the Jews who were sitting in the court of the guard.” Jeremiah 32:12 NASB

Eric Fenby was a natural musician. Born with perfect pitch, he served as an organist in several churches. A gifted composer, he wrote film scores and taught at London’s Royal Academy of Music. Yet Fenby achieved his greatest contribution as the man who collaborated with Frederick Delius.

He first heard Delius’ music in a 1928 radio broadcast. Profoundly moved, he learned that Delius had become blind and paralyzed, thus unable to compose. But Fenby offered to work with Delius, to write down music that formed in his mind. Delius accepted. The relationship worked and the result was a series of masterpieces.

This partnership was only possible because Fenby was trustworthy and had the attitude of a servant. He was a good listener, and willing to sacrifice personal fame.

This partnership reminds us of the relationship between Jeremiah and his servant, Baruch. Jeremiah had an important calling from God, and Baruch played a valuable role as his assistant.

In much the same way that Fenby served Delius, Baruch faithfully wrote down the words dictated by Jeremiah. Baruch went places Jeremiah could not go and delivered messages he wanted delivered. Baruch was so identified with Jeremiah that people assumed that his words had equal credibility. He even became the focal point of criticism that otherwise would have gone to Jeremiah.

Baruch and Eric Fenby provide examples of the importance of being a servant. Believers are called to have that attitude in their role in the Body of Christ. To realize that some are called to be on the frontlines and get attention. But others are called to help and serve.

In your life, ask God to give you the heart of a servant. And remember that God knows the truth about you, and what you do.

Prayer: Father, I humble myself before You. Give me the attitude of a servant. Help me to please and serve You, and bring You glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
